What are some of the pros and cons of self-publishing?
I’ve been trying to find a major publisher that would be able to market and distribute my novel for me, but it’s been difficult. I’ve been recommended for self-publishing but I’m not sure if it would be the right decision for me. Any suggestions on what I should do?
Well, the biggest con of self-publishing is vanity publishing & having to pay through the nose to have your own book published – rather than making money from it. Which is clearly wrong way of doing things. Also, publishers will market their books – you’ll have to do your own marketing, which can be either expensive money wise or time wise.
The pro is that you get the majority of the return, you can specialise for a niche market without being penalised (big publishers are more interested in book with wide audience appeal), and you can create a book that’s somewhat different from the norm.
If you’re interested you could try having a look through Amazon new self-Publishing Company. It doesn’t cost anything to sign up & look around (though if you distribute from them there are terms etc). They also do a sort of beta-servicing, cover designing and they’re the only self publisher I’ve ever heard of that prints ‘On-demand distribution’ i.e. if someone orders it on amazon, they print it & distribute it for you, rather than having to fork out for a full short run.
